Long Form Story Analysis & Retrospectives
Stories have always been used as a way to explore ideas or make moral statements about us and society. Our stories in video games are no different. On this channel we take a deep dive into our favorite video games and analyze the story, the mythology, religion, philosophy, messages and themes. In this context we take a look at what the game's story is trying to say and offer any critique or insight on the way. The world isn't black and white, left and right it's important to analyze storytelling in a way that calls our morals into question. I try to keep politics to a minimum and only bring up what pertains to the story.

Final Fantasy X-0: Braska/Jecht/Auron's story
Honestly I'd rather see that than a X 3
Japan had not surrendered until well after the second bomb was dropped.
I've already made a correction in the pinned comment. Thank you for helping out though I do appreciate it.
So glad AI stumbled upon this video. This was my absolute favorite FF game. I remember playing on my PS2 in middle school. I didn't want it to end. I wish I could say that I've felt that way about an FF game since.
17:25 whats the proof Avalanche killed innocent people? I know they blow up reactors. But I dont understand how civilians are affected. Does the explosion kill them? What dialouge are you looking at? Much thanks
You don't see anyone or persay any dialogue, but seeing as Final Fantasy VII functions much like our world would people be working in those reactors, making sure they ran and worked. Oddly enough one of the things I enjoyed most about the remake were the people on the street talking about the people working in the reactor who died or the person who comments they chose not to go to work today. Final Fantasy VII does show there is a working thriving economy who works in the upper plates. Those people would have been working those facilities.
@GamingWithSpoons that makes sense. It's a detail that has bugged me as a kid, I loved Barrett and company and didn't want to believe they killed people. Sadly it's true. Liked how you pointed out everyone's character development
Loved this growing up. I kinda want to revisit it, sometimes I don't bc of the numerous random battle encounters and length, the older I get the more I hate those characteristics in a game. Agreed sound design is a plus. I find the OST title track and end credits very calming. Great retrospective 👏
Didn't the shield give the higher attack but the sword was a balance between magic and strength
Maybe it never made it very clear...... I know the shield gives you a significant boost in HP. Moreso than the others.
I beat this game for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. I just played it again and enjoyed it even more because I actually took the time to do side content, learn all the abilities/supports and get the best gear. It’s an exceptional game.
Personal preference but I much rather enjoy long form analysis with less cut scenes and more talk. Interested to hear what you have to say having played the game innumerable times. Would rather these videos be treated as if there was little spoken dialogue. Enjoy your videos so certainly not a deal breaker....just a preference.
I'm going to do that moving forward. It's easier to edit and I think it flows better. Kingdom Hearts was hard to cover too because of the Disney worlds. Appreciate the feedback.
Your audio during the gummi ship sequence in the beginning is low. Cant hear over the firing
Thanks for bringing that to my attention oh well...... Guess its part of the video now basically just talking about the mechanics of the gummi ship.
new gaming with spoons content on a lazy sunday lets go 💪
I appreciate the watch :)
Your feedback is appreciated this was an experimental format. I tried to interject and edit my thoughts into what was happening with the story and give my thoughts while using scenes from the game let me know if you like the recaps in this format or if you think i should make a summary like ive done with games that dont have voice acting. Feedback is appreciated.
This retrospect single handedly changed my mind about this game! Thanks for sharing this
Your welcome thank you for watching :)
4:24 when a dumb guy is late doing magic
I loved this game and the sequel. I think i was 12 when this came out.
Man I love this game so much. I haven't beaten it yet but with God's grace soon I get to play it again.
Great video but I majorly disagree with your thoughts on Quina. Quina doesn't have an arc of their own, yes, but it is the perspective they provide on the themes of the game that earns them their spot in the party. Every character is defined in some way by what they are "supposed" to do. Garnet is supposed to be princess and then queen. Vivi was supposed to be another robotic soldier with a short shelf life. Zidane had his own predetermined role in the grand cosmic events we find out by the end. But then there's Quina. Quina's portrait literally has them saying "I do what I want." And they do. Every time we find a new village, Quina goes off on their own. When Quina is left behind, they usually leave because that's what they're called to do. While the characters around them struggle with their predetermined roles and what comes next when they shirk them, Quina has incredibly simple answers. On several occasions, characters like Freya or Garnet will comment on Quina's activities as displaying a level of freedom they wish they could have. That's why there's that scene where we see Quale yelling at Quina, only for her own mentor and Vivi's "grandfather" Quan to praise Quina for their creativity and imagination. That is the game directly telling us that Quina doing what they want is the ultimate answer to the themes of the game. Why get caught up in performing a role you were assigned? Why spend your short time stressing over either taking on that role or letting someone down by avoiding it? Do as Quina does and form your own path.
Someone else said something similar about this and shined light on a different perspective. I kinda changed what I thought of Quina. That's what makes these videos so cool thanks for the comment and different perspective.
@@GamingWithSpoons well thank you for making this video! I just had to stand up for my favorite frog hunter.
Your all good. I appreciate you watching :)
FF9 my faves too. They really need to make another original aesthetic FF game. Please. Just one more. Oh and thank you for the history lesson in the beginning. Learned something new today.
I'd love to see them return to the pre rendered backgrounds. Thanks for watching :)
I find that people who really love FF9 have FF9 as their first FF game. Every few years I’d play FF7, FF8 and FF9 (and prior to that FF4-FF6) back to back to back. Just to have as objective an opinion as possible. FF9 never stood out for me. It felt like a step backwards. For all the flaw of FF8, they attempted something bold and different. FF9 just feels like an homage to FF4. Even a lot of the music reflects FF4’s style. The game is boring at times to me because the system is so slow and simple and the story doesn’t really pick up until the second act. I think if FF9 were to be judged as its own game and not in comparison to other FF’s it would be better for me, but even as a good game, it’s definitely behind FF7. Heck, I personally liked FF4 better. Especially the remade FF4 for the Nintendo DS.
I can certainly understand some of the frustrations you had with Maya, though again maybe due to my own biases, I really didnt mind her not being able to attack for the early chunk. It isn't long at all before Kazan joins the party anyway, and is rightly a powerhouse as your mentor and master, and it leaves Maya comfortably able to use her turn to play healer as she likely would be anyway, whether it be with items or her spells, while the boys dish out the heavy damage. In the early sections, like the fight with Balkin, she can even still fight with certain attack-items in the citadel for some impressive numbers in those early hours alongside Lang to make short work of the big bad knight. I also gotta recommend trying more of the crafting menu if you ever give this game another go, as with the right materials found early, you can chain-upgrades to be multiple towns ahead in the early game. All in all, I found the game to be a wonderful and enjoyable time, and really enjoyed its cast even they are "tropey"(that doesnt necessarily make them bad!). Everyone has greater depth in the smaller moments, such as the campsites, or finding the characters located around towns like seeing Kazan and Galvan sharing a drink together when you make it back to Nohl. Its got so much charm and I think it still holds up alongside other games of its time such as Skies of Arcadia, and personally recommend people give it a shot and see where they lie
I appreciate you being so kind about your approach. I might revisit it at some point for fun. The crafting system wasn't elaborated much by the game, but it's definitely something I need to take a look at. Speaking of Arcadia I do want to take a look at that game to at some point.
As a kid, I remember playing this game first, alongside my older brother and my dad, it was one of the few specific RPGs we *all* really fell in love with for one reason or another, so I have a huge emotional attachment to this game. I also specifically remember trying to go backwards to Legaia 1 later in life, and just not having as good a time, I think partly due to things like the partial arte blocks really getting frustrating. I think I got stuck at one boss after getting the 3rd party member, in like a east/west forest thing? Id love to go back one day and try again, but I definitely hold Legaia 2 in a high regard, one of the best soundtracks, worlds, and combat systems in any JRPG, and one that I would love to see be done again in the future.
I've heard it said that there's a reason Anima is "so powerful", as Yuna puts it in the stadium in Luca. It's because it's a Final Aeon. It isn't actually the FInal Summoning that kills the summoner, but Yu Yevon's possession of the Final Aeon. Seymour completed his pilgrimage, Yunalesca turned his mother into a fayth for the Final Summoning, but he never actually used it to fight Sin. Instead he kept Anima for himself. And Anima is even more powerful for Seymour because it was created _for_ him. He's the one who shares a strong emotional bond with the fayth, and as Yunalesca clearly states, it's that bond that makes a Final Aeon so strong. Thus, Seymour basically had the most powerful Aeon in existence.
Anima is one of my favorite summons in the series.
Totally different feels. Ff7 was my first ff series and chrono cross was my first rog I actually finished first. They have totally different feels but are amazing games in their own right. My older bro beat ff7 but could never beat chrono cross. I think it depends on the player on the time they’re playing the game. It may not be for everyone but as someone who cherishes both to this day as someone in their 30’s these are the two most favorite and beloved games I will play over and over again until my life ends. Both hold nostalgia and overall hold such a place in my heart and soul. Gameplay, music, battles (were what they were at the time.) They are just perfect to me yet different game styles in their own way. Literally my top two games of my life❤❤❤
I love Final Fantasy VII too.
“…thats why i believe that cross is cross, and NOT TRIGGER 2” This is by far the most self defeating statement i ever read. The whole point of a sequel is to be [insert game] 2. These developers really went in a wrong direction no wonder the game is divisive
Even though FF8 was my first Final Fantasy, and still my favorite, FF7 is close second. It's amazing how they blended so many themes and ideas in a coherent story. Aerith's twist is legendary too, if you had any attachment to her, the twist is a total gut punch, the more fond you were the harder it felt. The gameplay aged nicely, and while it is somewhat rough around the edges, you can boot it up and have a total blast. The staple of a great game.
That Aerith scene still gets me it was totally unexpected.
The more of any Gem stone correlating to a Summon you get the more powerful the Summon. Hence why you should never sell any Gems, by the end of the game in Daggurero you can synthesise Gems. I always do Garnets to power up Bahamut, however, auto-Regen and boost can allow you to fully heal. It can render boost useless if you don't want to watch a full cutsecene. This makes Garnet/Dagger a better Black Mage than Vivi that can also use White Magick. In my opinion, I know people have issues that she doesn't get powerful and becomes Mute until after Esto Gazza. I personally think Dagger is the stronger of the two Summoners because of this. Eiko actually has 5 summons since you can change Titan to Fennrir. Along with Carbuncle changing it's attacks depending on the same principle of changing the Gem she has equipped when summoning it. Although, it comes at the price of an accessory slot.
I had no idea that the more of a gem you had the stronger the summon I've replayed this game more than I can count and never remembered them saying that. Thanks for the tip.
@@GamingWithSpoons I've played it more times than you could possibly count too. They alluded to it in that semi-shit guide... That, said I do love that guide for the art, but the alluded to the gems and Dagger/Garnet/Sara and Eiko, but never said. Referred you to PlayOnline... When nobody had the Internet, but okay PAL... Haha. I figured it out when you first get Ramuh you start to get get Perodot's in abundance, from enemies and I sold them all, then realised his damage was also calculated by the amount of whichever gem in this case Peridot. It adds into the Calculation. All of them I'm not sure about Atomos because Gravity is usually calculated by the enemies health.
I have played it more than times than one could possibly imagine. From FFIV - FFXII although IX is probably my favourite on par with VII, V XII and VIII. I realised the calculation in damage because after you first get Ramuh enemies throughout Gargan Roo and The Outer Continent drop Peridots, because I used to try anything to get as much gil as possible, because I always bought 4 of everything for Synthesising. I recognised it counted towards damage calculation. The infamous guide, that I kind of love because of the Art, and because it allowed me to figure things out myself as a kid. Mentioned that Gem stones were important, but to refer to PlayOnline for more information... at a time nobody had access to the Internet so stupid. However, now you can quite easily see that Dagger/Garnet/Sara's Eidolons damage output can be heavily changed because it calculates how many of the corosponding Gemstones are in your inventory. Eiko's Summons work quite differently, because you can change their moves and such but the chance of Phoenix improves DRAMATICALLY based on the amount of Phoenix Pinions in your inventory. In terms of the exact calculations I imagine they will be on the FFwiki. I thought your retrospective was amazing by the way. If you ever want to work on anything in future WildValatine is my UA-cam and gaming account I am new to the whole scene but my knowledge on all the FF's is not to be a conceited prick but fuck it... Unparalleled.
Nice to see someone give some love to Final Fantasy XII. I'll check out your channel as for a collab i'd be down. You can message me in discord or Twitter. I prefer discord discord.com/invite/6B55UFknq3
These devs sure love their psychologically tortured yet empowered soft featured female protags
Nice, enjoyed your research
I hate to say but i didn't even watch the review because the preview comment talked about you not liking the music. Then I saw your pinned comment addressing it meaning it must have been really bad. You sound like you are young so I understand not developing the same fondness for the soundtrack as us who played it in it's prime. But the music is one of it's strongest points, so you not liking it will make the whole review hard to sit through. It def sounds like this was a review based on a quick play for content, not on fondness of the game itself. Listening to the music for 40+ hours will definitely give you a different opinion on it.
Best rpg...but... The only thing i don't like..is that everyone join to ur party....
theres a project to remake the game with real engine 5 but we need more participants
That would be absolutely cool to see. I have no knowledge of game design or how to do it but you send me that info I can most certainly spread the word.
